The latest figures for Royal Mail in Stockport show a dramatic fall in deliveries, with them missing their 93% delivery target for first class letters by a staggering 27.9%. This made it the 8th worst performing area of the country.

Lisa Smart, Liberal Democrat MP for Hazel Grove constituency, has written to Parliament’s business and trade committee to demand increased scrutiny of Royal Mail’s inability to hit national targets, and to Royal Mail’s chief executive to demand a specific improvement plan for the area.

Lisa Smart said: “I have heard far too often from people who have missed, or nearly missed, health appointments because the letters just don’t arrive. I recently spoke to a lady who received a letter at 10am for an appointment at 11 the same day.

“All too often, people have given up an expectation of receiving their letters on time, and just think that the letters will turn up in a bundle once a week. That simply isn’t good enough.”

The MP has spoken to the local Royal Mail team, and while measures have been put in place to try and improve the service, a top-level national commitment, and the resources to make it happen, are needed.

The Liberal Democrat MP continued: “Royal Mail have failed to hit their targets for more than half a decade, and the figures are getting worse not better. It’s simply not good enough.”
