Win on delivering step free access at Bredbury station

MP Lisa Smart’s campaign to get step-free access to train stations throughout the constituency has received a major boost with the Department for Transport committing funding for the concept design.

Following extensive pressure from local campaigners, backed by the MP, the station is one of 23 in the country chosen for the detailed design work. The designs are due to be completed late next year.

Hazel Grove MP Lisa Smart said: “This is a substantial win for us. The previous Government had agreed the design work in principle, but committed no money to make it happen.

“We are one of very few locations in the country which have got this commitment, and I would like to thank all the people who have been working hard to make this happen.

Work will continue to ensure funding for the construction phase is in place, with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority having already committed to match funding the works.

Lisa Smart added: “It’s ridiculous that we have had access on one side of the station but not the other, which makes the station unusable in practice for anyone who can’t use steps. We’ve been working hard to get practical solutions in place, and this is a major boost.”
