Funding the desperately long backlog of repairs at Stepping Hill Hospital must feature in the Government’s Spring Statement, said local MP Lisa Smart, after she wrote to the Chancellor and Health Secretary ahead of the Government’s Spring Statement.

She demanded action after the Government’s response to her written question on funding for Stepping Hill showed that they had allocated just £2.5 million for repairs, when the backlog is over £130 million.

The Lib Dem MP for Hazel Grove constituency Lisa Smart said: “That is barely a drop on the ocean. At that rate, we’d be approaching the 22nd century before they even clear the current repairs backlog, never mind the investment that is clearly needed.

“We need a clear structured plan. That’s why we have proposed a second site to allow critical services to be provided, and allow works to be carried out efficiently and effectively at the current site, so local people get the services they deserve.

Following a question to the Prime Minister, Cheadle Liberal Democrat MP Tom Morrison received a promise to meet and discuss the investment needed at the hospital.

MP Lisa Smart added: “What we want to get from this meeting is action. The Government needs to stop just saying things about this and deliver. We don’t need sympathy, we need delivery.”
