Rising suicide rates must be addressed, says local MP
Statistics from the Office for National Statistics have revealed that suicide rates are currently at their highest since the turn of the century.
Local MP Lisa Smart highlighted the issue in Parliament and asked the for the Health Minister to come and address the House of Commons to update them on the Government’s strategy.
Lisa Smart, MP for Hazel Grove constituency, said: “These figures bear out what I am hearing from my local mental health trust. Far too many lives are being lost in this way, and it is critical that we improve mental health support for people.”
The MP also took time to champion the local organisations which are working hard to support those most in need of help.
She continued: “We need to hear from the Government on what more can be done to support the work of those at the coalface, such as the wonderful Stockport Samaritans, as they undertake their lifesaving work.”
If you are struggling to cope, please call Samaritans for free on 116 123 (UK and Ireland) or contact other sources of support, such as those listed on the NHS help for suicidal thoughts web page.
