MP marks 20,000 cases in two years

Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Hazel Grove, Lisa Smart, has surpassed 20,000 local issues raised with her since being elected two years ago.

The 20,000th issue was logged on the first day of Lisa's third year as the MP for the Stockport constituency of Hazel Grove, following her election in July 2024.

To date, Lisa and her team have received over 20,000 local issues, covering everything from visa and housing problems through to animal welfare and transport issues.

This includes, in the last 12 months alone, securing tens of thousands of pounds back for local people through rent arrears, overturned fines and missed benefit payments, getting 39 driving licences returned from the DVLA and supporting 1343 people with serious emergencies, including people at risk of homelessness or deportation.

Lisa said: “No two days are the same for the issues raised or requests that come into my office. The breadth of issues we deal with every day shows just how many people need someone in their corner.

“Whilst 20,000 is an incredible milestone, it’s important to remember that behind every number is a person or family. Many turn to us as a last resort after trying to navigate the complex systems of support elsewhere, or simply not knowing where to turn.

“I’m incredibly proud of our team for handling every situation with the care and compassion it deserves. Carefully listening, finding solutions and working tirelessly to get people the help they deserve.”

Lisa added: “In true fashion, and to my delight as a former councillor, the 20,000th issue raised with us was about overgrown hedges.

“As we look at the chaos in national politics, I'm pleased we're focused on the real issues affecting local people. And together, with our hardworking local Lib Dem councillors, we’re rolling up our sleeves and cracking on with the job.”
