Government finally listens to Lib Dems on Ofwat

After reports that the Government will scrap water industry regulator Ofwat, Liberal Democrat MPs, Tom Morrison and Lisa Smart called the decision a real step forward, if long overdue.
Tom Morrison, the MP for Cheadle said: “It’s about time the Government came to its senses. The Liberal Democrats have been demanding Ofwat be scrapped since 2022. If Ministers fail to follow through now, it would be a betrayal of United Utilities customers who for too long have put up with sewage dumping, poor service and rocketing bills.
“This must be the beginning of genuine reform. We need a tough, effective regulator that puts the environment and customers first, not the profits of United Utilities.”
Lisa Smart, MP for Hazel Grove constituency, added: “This failure to regulate this industry has been a national disgrace.
“I have been in regular contact with United Utilities pushing them for more action to deal with the problems across our area. People across Stockport are fed up with filthy rivers, sewage spills and costly, leaky pipes. We won’t stop fighting until our waterways are clean and protected.”
