A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

Commenting on today's Government figures showing the huge GCSE achievement gap between pupils from rich and poor backgrounds, David Laws said "It is shameful that the most disadvantaged children are only half as likely to get five good GCSEs than those who are better off."

Brussels loses patience with Harriet Harman over UK gay employment discrimination

The European Commission is threatening the UK government with a European court order and possible fine for breaching EU employment equality laws, by giving faith organisations wide latitude to discriminate against lesbian, gay and bisexual employees on grounds of religiously-motivated prejudice. Liberal Democrat European justice & human rights spokeswoman and London MEP Sarah Ludford said: "I have been campaigning on poor British implementation of European equality measures for a decade, ever since I became an MEP. The UK government has failed to make clear that religious freedom of thought must end at the point that it becomes unlawful discrimination against gay staff."

Christmas with the aliens

No this blog is not about tonight's full Council meeting. Last week I was at St Agnes' RC Primary School in Cricklewood. I have been a Governor there since 1988. This was my twenty second Christmas play. As usual it was the story of the Nativity. But this time we had space ships and sat-navs thrown in. So hence the title of their play "Christmas with the Aliens"
