Opening the door to politics for everyone

Unlocking talent, not privilege

Andrew Stunell dedicated his life to making politics more inclusive — not just for the well-connected or well-funded, but for everyone with the passion to serve.

We're proud to honour that legacy by launching the Andrew Stunell Fund, a new initiative to help people from underrepresented backgrounds take their first step into political life through paid internships with Hazel Grove Constituency Liberal Democrats.

These internships will be a fully supported placement, designed to remove some of the real-world barriers that too often prevent people from getting involved — like the cost of training, mentoring, and the support needed to build confidence and skills.

Help unlock talent, not privilege

Andrew believed that politics should be open to everyone, not just the well-connected or well-funded. He helped me understand what it truly means to make a difference in public life: to listen, to serve, and to bring others with you.

Help launch the Fund

We’re raising money now to help fund our next Andrew Stunell Internship — and we need your help to make it happen.

Lisa's committed to giving every intern experience of both the parliamentary and party political sides of the role. To do that, she’s using part of her parliamentary budget — and raising the rest through the generosity of our members and donors, to cover the party political element (around £7,000 per intern per year).

Every donation helps fund a salary, but also training, mentoring, and the support needed to take that all-important first step. Every donation brings us closer to a political system where opportunity is based on talent and commitment, not on who you know or where you come from.

Let’s build a future where everyone has a fair shot — and open the door to the next generation of changemakers.

Donate today!

What your donation will do

Your support will help us:

  • Fund internship placements and staff roles for people from underrepresented backgrounds
  • Cover the costs of high-quality training, mentoring, and development
  • Provide meaningful early career opportunities in politics

The Fund will contribute directly to the costs that make the biggest difference — helping talented individuals step forward, gain experience, and build a future in public service.

Andrew speaking at conference

Lord Andrew Stunell OBE

Over the years Andrew served as a local councillor in Stockport, and as Hazel Grove’s Member of Parliament for 18 years before he stood down, becoming a hard working member of the House of Lords.

Andrew was known by many local people for his genuine dedication, making a real difference even to individual problems that could be life changing, as well as campaigning on wider issues like the NHS and using his expertise to make legal reforms on building standards. Nationally he was respected for his quiet authority and extensive knowledge.

With all that, he also found time to be a loving husband, father and grandfather as well as an active church member. Working to the end, he was a principled and practical politician who proved that winning can mean making a difference.
