A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

Looking for Loos for Cheriton Rec

Cheriton Councillor Tim Prater is looking into the possibility of reinstating a public toilet into Cheriton Rec after a request from a local resident. The resident was pleased about plans to improve Cheriton Rec with new facilities, but raised the issue that with the nearest public toilets being some way away in Somerset Road and having no family facilities, the lack of a toilet in the park could be a public health issue.

No Countryside Explorer Bus For 2010 season.

Heather Kidd has expressed support for Highley Unitary Councillor Mary Nicholls and the Explorer Bus Working Group who are disappointed to report that the tourist bus is not expected to run for the April to October season this year, despite much support from residents on the route and a number of funding groups who were all keen to see the bus reinstated. It was hoped the bus would be a weekend and bank holiday bus which would provide valuable transport for tourists and residents between Cleobury Mortimer and Bridgnorth, taking in villages and tourist attractions on the way.

Jill Wareham at the cliff fall on the Military Road

Jill Wareham steps up campaign to save the Military Road

Jill Wareham, Liberal Democrat Prospective MP for the Island, is stepping her campaign to 'Save the Military Road'. She said: "Urgent action is needed as the road is likely to be closed very shortly if the erosion carries on as it has over the past week or two. I have visited the area where the cliff is closest to the road between Brook and Compton over the past two weekends. The first visit revealed a cliff fall at this point and in the past week another substantial fall has taken place. The footpath has slipped over the edge and the distance between the cliff edge and the fence along the road is now only 5m."
