A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

Green groups withdraw from nuclear consultation 'stitch up'

Britain's leading environmental groups have today pulled out of the consultation on whether the government should build a new generation of nuclear power stations. The coalition, which includes Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, WWF and Green Alliance, claim the government is distorting the evidence and say they are considering whether to take the case to court again. The group accused the government of "conducting a public relations stitch-up designed to deliver a preordained policy on new nuclear power" and "rushing" a consultation process that its advisers say should take at least nine months.

Bottled water insanity

Councillor Robin Lawrence and Claire Darke have attacked Britain's £2 billion thirst for bottled water as environmental insanity. More than two billion litres of bottled water fly off shop shelves every year and sales are growing at nearly 9 per cent a year. But in July the Drinking Water Inspectorate's report on water in the Midlands said that 99.8% of tap water samples passed their tests. Other tests reveal that there is no known health advantage to be gained from drinking bottled water instead of tap water.
