A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

Gap between rich and poor widening

Gordon Brown's policies to support the less well off are failing to prevent the gap between rich and poor widening again, official figures showed. The snapshot of the impact of taxes and benefits on households showed that the trend for those on the highest incomes to receive the biggest pay rises was outweighing the impact of tax credits, the minimum wage and extra spending on schools, hospitals and welfare benefits.

Hot food takeaway appeal

Under the smoke screen of the local elections, a planning application was made for a hot food takeaway in Sherwin Avenue in Springvale Ward. Nevertheless, although it was election time, Liberal Democrat Focus Team called on many of the surrounding properties to gauge their views. There was overwhelming opposition to the application and so the Councillors have submitted a formal objection to the application on the grounds of lack of parking and the noise and disruption to neighbouring properties. Cllr Richard Whitehouse said, "This is the second year running a planning application for a hot takeaway has been submitted during the election period. Last year it was for the former shop at the corner of Foster Avenue and Ettingshall Road and we successfully opposed that application. Let us hope we can do the same with this one."
