The Liberal Democrats today revealed radical proposals to transform Britain into an international leader in tackling climate change, making the country carbon neutral by 2050. The measures, which will be debated at the party's conference in Brighton next month, strengthen the Liberal Democrats' position as the only major political party with specific proposals designed to face the challenge of climate change.
Local MP, Tim Farron is calling for the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to relax the rules on animal gathering ahead of next months Westmorland County Show. Since the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in Surrey earlier this month DEFRA has placed restrictions on animal movements and gatherings, but since it would appear that the disease has not taken hold, Mr Farron is keen for the Westmorland County Show to continue as normal with livestock.
Petrol-powered cars should be phased out within decades to help fight climate change, say the Lib Dems. Environment spokesman Chris Huhne says cars should use alternative fuel - like hydrogen fuel cells - by 2040 as part of plans to make the UK carbon-neutral. "The EU acting together through the internal market can make sure that change happens," he said.

Rochdale Borough's Leader of the Council, Councillor Alan Taylor, has slammed cuts at both Rochdale Infirmary and Fairfield Hospital in Bury. Councillor Taylor was speaking after the Secretary of State for Health Alan Johnson MP last week rubber-stamped the decision of health bosses to close down A&E and maternity wards in Rochdale. Councillor Taylor is now calling for the cuts to be brought up at the next meeting of AGMA (Association of Greater Manchester Authorities) as a matter of urgency.
