Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice. Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Wind farms are getting funds earmarked for other schemes

At the Labour Party conference, Environment Secretary David Miliband promised £10m to help fund projects like wind power. But it has emerged that this £10m will come from cutting schemes to promote double-glazing and insulation. Park Ward's Lib Dem candidate Robin Lawrence said "There is little point building wind farms to provide energy that will be wasted in badly-insulated buildings. These insulation schemes were designed to promote household energy efficiency. This is an area where a lot of energy is still wasted and where people can make their own individual contribution to dealing with one of today's major issues."

Special needs training to improve

Training given to teachers of children with special educational needs (SEN) or disabilities will be improved, Alan Johnson, education secretary, has said. The pledge follows criticism from the Commons education select committee earlier this year that the education of these pupils was "not fit for purpose".
