A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

TWO THIRDS SEE OPPORTUNITY FOR LIBERAL DEMOCRAT BREAKTHROUGH

In his Queen's Speech response, acting Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable highlighted what he called a "grand coalition of ideas" between Labour and the Conservatives. It seems most people agree. A poll for The Times has found that 64% of those questioned think "there is so little difference now between Labour and the Conservatives that there is a real opportunity to make a breakthrough if the Lib Dems can develop some clear and distinctive policies".

GM Crops should be approved unless proven safe say Liberal Democrats

Ministers must not approve commercial planting of GM crops in England, until it is proved safe, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary Chris Huhne has said. Responses to a Defra survey showed that most opposed Defra's plan to allow GM crops to be grown in fields at least 35m from non-GM crops. A Defra spokesman said they would await the results of three reports, due next spring, before plans are taken further. No commercial GM crops are yet grown in the UK, but the government wants to have measures in place in England for the coexistence of GM and organic crops.
