The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first. 

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Depression linked to Alzheimer's

People who have had depression may be more prone to Alzheimer's disease, two studies suggest. Dutch researchers found Alzheimer's was 2.5 times more likely in people with a history of depression. Similarly, US researchers, examining Catholic clergy, found those with signs of depression were more likely to go on to develop Alzheimer's.

Football ref will repay benefits

A football referee secretly filmed in charge of a game while claiming disability benefits has been sentenced to a 12-month community order. Christopher Stockwell, 52, of Kidwelly, was also ordered by magistrates at Haverfordwest to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and will repay the £9,034.

Solicitor guilty of fraud jailed

A solicitor who stole more than £1m from a disabled client has been jailed for 10 years at Manchester Crown Court. Thomas McGoldrick, 59, of Faulkners Lane, Mobberley, Cheshire, lived a life of "extravagance" while taking the money from client Keith Anderson.

Liberal Democrats launch Local Election campaign

The Liberal Democrats have a record to be proud of in local government, said Nick Clegg. He was speaking at the launch of party's campaign for council elections in England and Wales. The Lib Dems are defending about 700 seats in the 1 May elections. Speaking at the campaign launch in Sheffield, he accused Labour of failing on crime and the Tories of having "no stomach" for addressing green issues.
