A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

Clegg attacks Brown's 'ragbag' proposals

"The government's planned legislation is a "ragbag of proposals" at the end of a "dreadful week" for the Prime Minister", said Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg. He said it was just the latest in a long list of re-organisations by the government since 1997 - including a 14th reform bill for the NHS.

Local MP slams Immigration Advisory charges

Local MP Tim Farron has criticised the Government over the excessive amount the Immigration Advisory Service is charging for an appointment with an adviser over immigration issues. In the past the Immigration Advisory Service had offered all appointments for free, however since the 1st of April 2004 clients have been required to provide information on their financial situation and will then be assessed accordingly. In some cases people have been charged over £100 per appointment with an adviser.
