Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice. Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Brown should be a candid friend to the US says Campbell

Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Ming Campbell when commenting on Gordon Brown's visit to the US said "There are three things which should be on Gordon Brown's agenda when he meets President Bush: renegotiation of the one-sided extradition treaty; the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention centre; and a negotiated withdrawal of British forces from Iraq. These should be the objective of a candid friend. The excessively subordinated relationship between the President and Mr Blair should be put to bed."

Green Tax Switch Needed to Cut Carbon Emissions and Reverse Spiralling Cost of Using Public Transport

Bedford Borough Liberal Democrats have repeated their calls for a Green Tax Switch to protect the environment and reward individuals for making sustainable choices after the Labour Government admitted that the cost of using public transport has spiralled since 1997.

"Family First" service under threat

The Family First service, which helps prevent young people having to go into care, is under threat as Surrey County Council pulls its funding from this project. The service, which is a partnership between the County Council and the children's charity NCH, helps young people who have been excluded from school or who have problems at home.

Lib Dems Call for Urgency in Transport Coordination

John Doran, Lib Dem spokesman on Transport, last week proposed a motion calling for more urgency in the development of the Transport Co-ordination Centre (TCC). In October 2004 the Executive of the Council had endorsed the proposal to set up a TCC, which was backed by all parties because it was claimed that there could be a 10% saving on a budget of £45 million.
