A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

With the County Council being abolished on 1 April 2009 it is down to Bedford Borough, Central Beds and Luton Councils to decide whether to progress with the plans.

Justice for Gurkhas?

The High Court ruling that the Home Office's instructions denying Gurkhas the right to live in the UK are unlawful, is a great moral victory not only for these brave warriors, but also for the long campaign fought on their behalf. This was backed recently by actress Joanna Lumley after being raised in Parliament by Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg MP last March and again in June.

Guarantee bank deposits - Clegg

Nick Clegg says people need more reassurance about their savings. Bank customers must be given a "copper-bottomed" guarantee that all their savings and deposits are safe, Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has said. He urged the government to follow the lead of its Irish counterpart and to guarantee all customers' money in High Street banks, no matter what amount.
