A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

Councillors Wera and William threatened to get on their bikes during the meeting!

Council Meetings a disgrace!

Councillor Alan Taylor said, "It is quite obvious that we need to look at how meetings are conducted. There was a very simple reason why the Council Meeting overran - There were 6 Notice of Motions and the amendments that came with them. The Liberal Democrats have long understood the importance of Notices of Motion to shape Council Policy and the difference with this meeting was that for a change - Labour and the Conservatives put three in too. Councillor Rush's motion was excellent and will contribute significantly to the fight against the anti-social use of off-road bikes. The personal attacks from all sides of this chamber must stop though - we need to concentrate on Council Policy.
