A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

Discrimination and intimidation have no place in a liberal society

In today's Leader's speech to the Liberal Democrat Party Conference in Brighton, Ming Campbell highlighted the party's commitment to equality and liberation as cornerstone values of the party, saying, "If a person is bullied because they're gay - then I stand with them." He underlined this point, "Discrimination and intimidation have no place in a liberal society."

Sir Menzies Campbell makes a powerful conference speech

Sir Menzies Campbell has used his closing speech at the Liberal Democrat conference to hit back at critics who say he is too old to lead the party. Sir Menzies, 66, said he would make age an issue at the next election because "with age comes experience, and with experience comes judgement". He received a standing ovation for the speech which he hoped would end this week's speculation about his future. To loud applause he said he answered to Lib Dems members and "not the media". He said he aimed to "rattle the cage" of British politics and smash the "cosy consensus" between Labour under Gordon Brown and the Conservatives under David Cameron.

Liberal Democrats discuss flooding

Conference this morning discussed the recent flooding and how to manage the impact and risk of flooding. Annual flood damage now averages £2.3 billion per year, and this total is rising as climate change increases the variability of weather patterns. Over two million homes are currently at risk from flooding, and this may underestimate homes at risk from inadequate drainage and extreme rainfall.
