A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

WATCH OUT FOR LEAD THIEVES

Thieves have been stealing lead from roofs and above bay windows, and reports have come in over the last few days of theft in many parts of Elm Tree. Councillors Julia Roberts and Suzanne Fletcher are letting as many people know as possible, so that people can be extra vigilant and keep an eye open for anything looking suspicious connected with this. They are urging people to make contact with the Police straight away with details if they see anything.

Strong and Independent Liberal Democrats reject Brown's attempt to co-opt Peers

Gordon Brown wanted to appoint Liberal Democrat peers to his ministerial team, it has emerged. The Prime Minister-in-waiting offered former Lib Dem leader Lord Ashdown the post of Northern Ireland Secretary, and wanted to appoint other Lib Dem peers to non-cabinet roles, but Menzies Campbell and Lord Ashdown rejected the proposal. This comes just two months after Menzies Campbell rejected overtures from David Cameron about putting forward a joint Lib Dem - Tory candidate for London mayor. There is debate in the papers and political blogs about whether this was a genuine attempt by Brown to form a 'government of all the talents' (there are rumours he has approached Tories and non-party figures too) or simply a cheap gesture to look open and pluralist that he knew would be rejected. Liberal Democrat MP Phil Willis said on
