A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

Northern Rock to cost every taxpayer £900

Every taxpayer in Britain has something like £900 of their money at stake in this small mortgage bank following the £24 billion loan (which excludes the less controversial £18 billion in deposit guarantees). When Tony Blair was Prime Minister he was widely and rightly criticised for squandering £800 million on the Millennium Dome. This Prime Minister and this Chancellor have invested the equivalent of 30 Millennium Domes in Northern Rock and we don't even have a few pop concerts to show for it.

Farron issues rallying call to save under-threat post offices

Local MP Tim Farron is today issuing a petition to each of the 43 under-threat post offices in his constituency, as part of his campaign against the Government's planned raft of post office closures. Mr Farron is also urging local people to write to him regarding their local post office which he will then pass on to the regional Post Office Limited representative. It is hoped that this will show how much local people in the area use their post office.

Local MP launches last-ditch attempt to save Cross-Country service

Local MP Tim Farron has today tabled a parliamentary motion in an attempt to persuade the Government to re-examine the case for Cross-Country rail services. The Cross-Country franchise will change hands this month and direct services from the North West and Scotland to the South Coast will be removed, and passengers face the prospect of having to change trains during their journey, most likely at Birmingham New Street station.
