The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first. 

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? House of Lords should be predominately elected

Commenting on reports that the Government's White Paper on House of Lords reform will suggest a chamber half-elected and half-appointed, Liberal Democrat Shadow Constitutional Affairs Secretary, Simon Hughes MP said: "Whatever the contents of the White Paper, Liberal Democrats will continue to press for a predominately elected second chamber. There must be an open and honest debate about the arrangements for an effective second chamber which will properly hold the Government to account. "The objective for all reforms of Parliament is to make sure that the legislature passes good laws and that the executive is held to account."
