A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

Does Heathrow need a third runway?

The Government has given the green light to build Heathrow's third runway. The main argument centred on trying to solve the real fact that Heathrow is overcrowded and is operating at over 90% capacity. The Government says that a third runway is necessary to meet rising demand. The Liberal Democrats oppose a third runway and propose major investment in high speed rail links with the UK's major cities to reduce domestic air travel as well as carbon emissions. What do you think? Please let Rosie know by completing our survey.

Sharon Bowles MEP has welcomed the adoption of a key European Parliament report on fundamental rights which calls for mutual recognition of same-sex partnerships by EU members. Sharon, who is Lib Dem MEP for the South East of England, authored a written declaration in September calling for mutual recognition of same-sex partnerships by EU member states, which has gained cross-party support and closes for signatures on Thursday.
