Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice. Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Clegg calls for rolling back of surveillance state as bugging inquiry is launched

Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg has called for a rolling back of the surveillance state, following revelations about the bugging of Labour MP Sadiq Khan. Justice Secretary Jack Straw has announced that Sir Christopher Rose, the Chief Surveillance Commissioner will undertake a two week inquiry. A police officer has claimed he was forced by the Metropolitan Police to carry out the bugging of Mr Khan and his constituent Babar Ahmed, who was being on terror charges in Woodhill Prison.

Post office campaign update - 5,500 people protest against closures

Local MP Tim Farron's campaign to save the 42 local post offices threatened by Government closures continued this week as he secured a promise from Post Office Limited that they would read every one of the letters they receive during the consultation. So far over five and a half thousand supporters have emerged from communities in Mr Farron's constituency alone.

MP welcomes dropping of Baycall merger plans

Local MP Tim Farron has today welcomed the decision by Cumbria Primary Care Trust to drop plans to merge the out-of-hours GP service Baycall with a similar service from the north of the county, Cuedoc. There had been plans to combine the two, which had led to fears that there may be a reduction in the quality of service provided for patients.

Ambulance service criticisms call closure plans into doubt

Local MP Tim Farron has expressed his concern at a report from North Cumbria Acute Hospitals NHS Trust into the performance of the North West Ambulance Service, which states that the service is "the ambulance service is struggling to maintain improvement" when it comes to the issue of administering thrombolysis - the process of giving a patient a 'clot-busting' drug prior to being admitted to hospital.

Primary school place shortage in Epsom & Ewell

The number of children hoping to start at primary schools in Epsom & Ewell next September appears to exceed the total number of places available in the borough. Figures quoted at a recent meeting of Surrey County Council indicate that although there is a small surplus of 30 secondary school places, there is a shortfall of 11 for entry to reception classes at age 4+.
