Stamford achieves Quality Parish Status at last!
Stamford Lib Dems are delighted that Stamford Town Council was awarded the official certificate for Quality Parish Status on 19th February 2008.
The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.
We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice. Planning permission for a four-storey care home for up to 109 elderly residents is set to be built in London Road on a site currently occupied by just four houses. Sunrise Senior Living, a US company who will be charging a minimum of £700 per room per week, now aims to open the home within the next 2 years.

Commenting on today's events in Parliament following the refusal of the Speaker to allow a vote on the Liberal Democrat amendment calling for an in-out referendum on the EU, Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg said:
Bedford Borough Council's current system of delegating planning application decisions from the Planning Committee to officers has been running for nearly four years despite being authorised as only a twelve-month trial back in May 2004, the Liberal Democrats have discovered. The startling revelation confirms that hundreds of planning decisions have been made behind closed doors by council officers using powers that were due to expire in May 2005.
