Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice. Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Paul Rowen MP on walking out of the Commons

Rochdale MP Paul Rowen has commented on the astonishing scenes in Parliament where the Lib Dems walked out in support of their colleague, Foreign Affair's Spokesman Ed Davey MP. Mr Davey was ordered out amid chaotic scenes at the House of Commons. Almost a full slate of Lib Dem MPs including Mr Rowen then followed Mr Davey out of the chamber. This was in protest at the Deputy Speaker's refusal to debate the party proposal for an 'EU - in or out' referendum.

Private firms to find people work

Private firms and voluntary groups are to be offered cash incentives to get unemployed people into work for longer. Work Secretary James Purnell said the plan, which will see more payments if someone is in work for six months, was intended to "personalise" services. It came as MPs said 40% of jobseekers allowance claimants who find a job are out of work again within six months.

Diabetic mice 'cured' with drugs

US scientists have managed to rid diabetic mice of the effects of the disease using a cocktail of drugs. The mice, who had type 1 diabetes, started producing their own insulin after taking a mixture of four drugs.
