At a meeting of Rochdale Borough Council - Councillors voted to support:
The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.
We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice. Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? The publication today (24th July 2006) of the Atkins Report by Rochdale Council into asbestos and non-asbestos contamination at the former TBA site at Spodden Valley has been welcomed by Rochdale MP Paul Rowen.
Following a meeting of the Rochdale Borough Council Cabinet, all 4 Townships will benefit from a significant cash boost. £250,000 has been set aside to assist Township Members across the Rochdale Borough to 'turn their priorities into action'. This is on top of the £400,000 that is already in the Council's Capital Programme. Each Township will receive a proportion of this money based on population to spend on their priorities, Councillors can sponsor a project like road resurfacing, street lighting, litter bins etc.
Rochdale MP - Paul Rowen has continued to campaign for justice for all victims of Mesothelioma. Paul, a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Asbestos has been constantly speaking up to get a fair deal for sufferers in his Constituency of Rochdale. Rochdale was once home to the biggest asbestos factory in the world and the town is affected by this disease more than many across the country.
