A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

Our Neville

It is with great sadness we have to report that Neville Reed, a long-standing Delga executive member, passed away last week. Our thoughts and wishes go with his family and friends. Neville was our Treasurer for some seven years up to the end of 2006, when he stepped down from the executive, and will be greatly missed throughout both the organisation and wider Liberal Democrat circles.

Government hubris on housing could lead to misery for millions, says Cable

Liberal Democrat Acting Leader Vince Cable has warned that a house market crash is a real possibility and that the Government needs to act now to ensure that millions of people do not face the misery of negative equity and repossessions. This comes after figures show that the average UK household debt to disposable income ratio is up from 92% 1997 to 152% today.

Slide in reading and maths league tables is a blow for the Government

UK secondary school students have slipped down an international league table of reading and maths standards. Based on test results in 2006 by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the UK has lost the top 10 positions it held for both subjects seven years ago. This follows figures released last week, which showed that the UK had tumbled down the league table for school science.
