GM decisions should not be made behind closed doors - George
Commenting on reports that the Government are on the verge of making a policy decision on GM, Andrew George MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Food and Rural Affairs Secretary said:
The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.
We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice. Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Councillor Janet Maines, Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Surrey County Council, commenting on the County Council budget said, "I welcome the single figure increase in the Council tax for Surrey residents, which is good news for people on fixed incomes including pensioners. But I have opposed the budget because the Conservative administration at County Hall has not gone far enough to reduce bureaucracy and inefficiency within the Council. The base budget has not been examined in detail as was agreed by the Council one year ago. A number of multi-million pound contracts are not being adequately controlled by the Council. Although the Council is now making a welcome start to introduce cost-saving preventative measures such as key worker housing and energy efficiency promoted by the Liberal Democrats, it has been slow to do so."
Mike Carr has been selected by local Liberal Democrat members as their prospective Parliamentary candidate. He won a closely fought contest in which all local members had a vote. Mike lives in the constituency and has a wealth of experience.
The Town Meeting held last Wednesday, 4th February, has been dismissed by local Lib Dems as unrepresentative.
Mid Sussex Liberal Democrats were campaigning amongst shoppers in Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill on Saturday morning to get rid of Council Tax and its replacement with a fair alternative based on ability to pay. Serena Tierney, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Mid Sussex , said: "In two hours nearly 500 people signed a petition in favour of for the replacement of Council Tax with a local income tax. At times people were queuing to sign the petition."
