A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

"Hospital fight can still be won" - Farron

Local MP Tim Farron is today urging local people not to give up in the fight to save Westmorland General Hospital from a dramatic reduction in services. Hundreds of local people have written formal complaints to the hospital trust, only to receive a standard letter informing them that the Trust does not intend to treat them as a formal complaint, and Tim Farron is urging people to write to the Healthcare Commission instead.

Government narrowly wins vote on Iraq Inquiry

An attempt to force the Government to hold an inquiry into the Iraq war has failed, but the Government's majority was slashed to just 25. Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Menzies Campbell commenting on the result said "The figures only tell part of the story. The Government was on the defensive. Ministers were unconvincing and their backbenchers were unconvinced. There is deep unease about Iraq in the House of Commons. And the Prime Minister ignores this at his peril."

Cost Cutting Affects the Vulnerable

Conservatives at Essex County Council are planning a series of cuts that are already biting into services provided for the more vulnerable members of the community. Cuts in library facilities have already taken place and there are proposals to drastically cut mobile library services. A proposed sell off of Greyfriars, an adult education centre in Colchester, will result in a nursery for children with special needs being put out on the street.
