Save our green belt
The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.
We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice. Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Tories split by Defection in Southall
A senior Conservative in Southall has defected to the Liberal Democrats, following the imposition of a candidate on the local party by Tory spin doctors. Mr Brij Mohan Gupta, Deputy Chair of Southall Conservatives has joined the Liberal Democrats and backed the Liberal Democrat by-election candidate Nigel Bakhai.

Sir Menzies reshuffles top team
Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell has reshuffled his front bench - promoting some of the party's rising stars. David Laws takes on the children, schools and families brief and Danny Alexander goes to work and pensions. Lembit Opik is moved from Northern Ireland and Wales to become Lib Dem spokesman on business, enterprise and regulatory reform. David Heath becomes Lib Dem spokesman for justice and the Lord Chancellor's office and Susan Kramer replaces Alistair Carmichael at transport. Party President Simon Hughes replaces Mr Heath in shadowing Commons leader Harriet Harman.

Clubbers warned over hearing loss
A charity for deaf people is warning that loud music in pubs and clubs is leading to a hearing loss "time bomb". The Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID) found that the hearing of about 70% of people who visited nightclubs was affected. The group is now calling on the Scottish Executive to introduce recommended noise exposure levels for revellers to prevent future damage. The study also found loud music damaged the ears of nearly 50% of pub goers.

Epilepsy 'increases suicide risk'
People with epilepsy are three times more likely to commit suicide than the general population, research suggests. Danish researchers also found women with epilepsy were more likely to kill themselves than men with the condition. People diagnosed with epilepsy in the previous six months were at an even higher risk of committing suicide. The Lancet Neurology study said greater efforts were needed to control seizures, which could be stigmatising, and had many knock-on effects. The Aarhus University Hospital team studied 21,169 cases of suicide in Denmark between 1981 and 1997.
