Save our green belt
The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.
We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice. Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Putnoe Liberal Democrat councillors have reacted angrily to proposals from the Council that seek to turn a large part of Mowsbury Golf Course and the Wentworth Drive Athletic Rugby Ground into housing.

Action on Unauthorised Encampments to go Ahead
Following the appearance of large numbers of unauthorised encampments across Bedford over the past year, the Lib Dems have campaigned for effective action to protect council land in the most vulnerable areas. The Liberal Democrats first proposed to the council's Corporate and Resource Committee in November last year that £40,000 be spent on physical protection of public spaces from unauthorised encampments, for instance, using barriers and bunds.

Reflections on Beijing Olympics by Merlene Emerson
'Ao Yun' in Mandarin or 'Jeux Olympiques' as they say in France. Wherever you may be this month, it is probably difficult to get away from news on the Beijing Olympics. It is afterall the largest international sporting event showcasing the best in athletics and sports. Athletes from no less than 204 'nations' compete for titles and medals. China, as host nation, is on track to break new records in more ways than one. Described in the Economist as something of a 'coming-out party' after over a century of foreign colonisation, civil war and poverty, she is poised to show her return as a great world power.
