A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

Cadets at Camp do Chesterfield Proud

Chesterfield MP Paul Holmes and local Staveley Councillor Mick Bagshaw attended the Derbyshire Army Cadets Annual Summer Camp in Ripon this week. Around 360 cadets, both male and female, are attending the camp for two weeks of adventures and expeditions. Paul and Cllr Bagshaw have already met the Staveley branch of the Army Cadets at a joint event with the Royal British Legion, but both said the insight gained from visiting the 2-week Summer camp was amazing.

Lib Dems urge immigrant amnesty

Illegal immigrants should be given "selective amnesty" to allow them to earn the right to British citizenship, the Liberal Democrats have said. Home affairs spokesman Nick Clegg MP said "Those staying long-term should be able to apply for permanent residence. But they should be required to fulfil a series of conditions, such as the ability to speak English", he added. Mr Clegg told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the problem of long-term illegal immigrants needed to be tackled. "This, frankly, is just in recognition of the fact that, because of incompetence or mismanagement in the immigration system over many years, we have very large numbers of people who live in this kind of twilight world of illegality and, in many cases, exploitation in the workplace which we need to deal with," he said.

Expand flood warnings systems urges report

A report released today has warned that a nationwide warning system on flash rainfall flooding is urgently needed if Britain is to be able to cope with another deluge of rain like that which hit the country in June. The independent report into why Hull suffered so badly and was left inundated with flood water has recommended the Environment Agency issue warnings that cover extreme rainfall. Hull City Council, which commissioned the report, found 7,000 homes were flooded and 1,300 businesses affected after a normal month's worth of rain fell in 24 hours. The IRB called for the Environment Agency to look with "great urgency" at whether its current Floodline system of warnings for river and tidal flooding can be expanded to cover flash rainfall incidents

Lottery bid for Springvale Park

Cllr Malcolm Gwinnett has held discussions with Council Officers and it has been agreed that Springvale Park will be included in a general bid to the lottery for improvements to different parks across Wolverhampton. If successful the money will be used to enhance the walkways through the woodland area, provide a natural woodland style play area and also be used to reinstate the pool which once teamed with wildlife. This park is a real gem and Springvale residents have been urged to visit it.
