Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice. Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Responding to a letter published in the local press last week Michael Headley said, "The letter lumps the Liberal Democrats in with the Tories and Labour in its claim that none of the parties' policies offer what the writer is looking for. I suspect that he harks back to Old Labour, which I agree the Liberal Democrats aren't and never have been. But if you are looking for a party that stands for fairness, freedom and trust then the Lib Dems do offer a different approach and it's one that attracted me to the party many years ago."

Tories U-Turn to Back Incineration

Essex County Council's Conservative administration is proposing to build an incinerator in the county to deal with the treatment of waste. Ian Gale (Lib Dem spokesman on waste management and Chelmsford West County Cllr), said: "After years of insisting that they have a 'no incineration' policy and contesting elections on that basis, Essex Conservatives have now effected a spectacular U-turn.

"Nurses still overworked and underpaid" - Farron

Local MP, Tim Farron has today criticised the government over pay rates for nurses in the NHS. This comes following the announcement that nurses will receive a staged pay rise of 1.5% for April 2007 and 1% in November 2007, which will result in a significant real terms pay cut because of the rate of interest.
