Kennedy: Government must make tough choices on environment
Responding to comments by Shell Chairman Lord Oxburgh that climate change makes him "really very worried about the planet", Charles Kennedy, Leader of the Liberal Democrats said:
The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.
We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice. Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? The Liberal Democrats made substantial progress in the European Elections in the North West on June 10th. Chris Davies was re-elected as a MEP and he was joined by Sajjad Karim as the Liberal Democrats gained an extra seat.
Knighton Park is to benefit from the new Lib Dem City Council's priority to look after Leicester. Worn out paths are to be resurfaced, new planting is to replace worn out beds, broken benches are to be replaced and play equipment is to be replaced and improved.
The Lib Dem group proposed a motion at the County Council meeting on 15th June to urge the Government to retain free school transport. However, the Conservative administration at County Hall refused to debate the subject in time to respond to the Government's consultation's deadline of 25th June.
The Liberal Democrat group have called on Surrey County Council's Conservative administration to allow Local Committees to run their own local Youth Services. The Lib Dems are also demanding an explanation about the budget for the Youth Service this year.
