Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice. Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? European Union agrees new green targets

European Union leaders have agreed to adopt a binding target on the use of renewable energy, such as wind and solar power, officials say. UK PM Tony Blair said the deal was "a major step" which put the EU in a leadership position on climate change. There had been strong opposition from some countries to the proposal to boost renewable fuel use to 20% by 2020, however EU leaders agreed to both that and a target of cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 20% from 1990 levels by the same year.

Anger over sign language charges

A Harrogate family say they are angry that they have to pay for sign language lessons to enable them to communicate with their two-year-old son. Debby Wood and her daughter Natalie have been taking sign language lessons at Harrogate College to help them talk to son Alex, who was born deaf.
