WOKING BOROUGH COUNCIL: ELECTIONS 2006
Joint statement by Woking Borough Council Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Sue Smith and Deputy Leader Philip Goldenberg
The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.
We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice. Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.
Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

City Centre & West End LibDem Councillor Fraser Macpherson today (Saturday 6th May) paid a visit to Dundee's Dudhope Park which was the venue for the Parklife Launch Event - a picnic of action and music.
The Liberal Democrats said all along that the Tories couldn't win in Park Ward but when the votes were finally counted they were in 3rd place. Voting Conservative actually let Labour win as they had just 128 votes more than the Liberal Democrats.
With turnout up this year, possibly due to the large number of postal voters, Robin Lawrence came within 128 votes of winning Park Ward at his first attempt. The election was hard fought and resulted in a larger than ever share of the votes for the Liberal Democrats.
Councillor Neil Matthews has become the new Mayor of Hythe. Neil was unanimously elected at the Annual Council Meeting on Thursday, 4th May 2006. Congratulations to Neil from all at Shepway Liberal Democrats.
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell has said the local elections represented "consolidation" as the Lib Dems won a greater share of the vote than Labour. Sir Menzies said the elections had not been a "test" of his leadership but of the party in general.
