Council Postpones Local Democracy Week
A major event for young people due to begin on 12th October has been abandoned by the Borough Council with just two weeks to go.
The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

In particular he announced plans to hold a referendum on whether to replace the first past the post voting system with the Alternative Vote (AV) early in the next Parliament - assuming Labour wins the next election. This is almost the very definition of too little, too late. While AV would give the voter somewhat more choice, it is not proportional. Promising a referendum after the general election is meaningless: remember when Labour promised this in 1997?
