A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

Flag, family and foreigners centre stage in Cameron's speech

David Cameron went back to traditional Tory issues in his conference speech in an effort to firm up his grassroots. Tax cuts, controlling immigration, a referendum on the proposed European Union treaty and the need to 'support families' were all prominent in the Conservative leader's lengthy speech. Quoting a school teacher he had met who had told him the key to improving schools was "discipline, discipline, discipline", Mr Cameron said the Tories would scrap appeals against head teachers' decisions on expulsions. He pledged to end the "couple penalty" on benefits, and recognise marriage in the tax system. He said the Conservatives were ready for a snap poll, adding: "We will fight, and Britain will win."

Iraq - Brown accused of manipulating figures and ignoring Parliament

UK troops in Basra are to be cut by 1,000 by the end of the year, Gordon Brown has said on a visit to Iraq. However, it has emerged that the withdrawal of 500 of these troops had been announced in July, and 270 of them are already back home. 4,500 UK troops are expected to remain at the Basra Airport base into next year. The announcement was branded "cynical politics" by the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives.

Lib Dem MPs lobby Ministers on farm prices

Local MP Tim Farron has joined with a group of fellow Liberal Democrat MPs to lobby the Secretary of State for DEFRA Hillary Benn on the cripplingly low prices offered to farmers by supermarkets following the outbreak of foot and mouth. Mr Farron, who last week called on the Prime Minister to force supermarkets to 'play fair', joined with six other MPs, including the Lib Dem spokesman on the Environment Chris Huhne to persuade supermarket bosses to heed the call.
