A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

ring road hermit

Wolverhampton's celebrity hermit has died.

Josef Stawinoga, a Polish war veteran, had lived in a tent in the middle Wolverhampton's ring road for more than 35 years. West Midlands Police confirmed the body of an 87-year-old man, named locally as Mr Stawinoga, was found in a tent on Sunday afternoon. The city council paid tribute to him saying he was part and parcel of life in the city for decades. If no next of kin or friends come forward to organise the funeral, the council will make the necessary arrangements.

Wolverhampton members prepare to choose a new Party leader

A large contingent from Wolverhampton were in a packed house at Benn Hall in Rugby to see Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne go head to head at the West Midlands Leadership Hustings on Saturday 27 October. Both Chris and Nick said that they wanted to project the Liberal Democrats as the radical party of change and set themselves a quest to break the mould of two party politics over two parliaments. Both spoke eloquently with their own particular style, and either will make a leader who is capable of delivering on the party's aspirations.

Brown is not Green - The Prime Minister is shirking the Environmental Challenge

A year on from the publication of the Stern report and promising to "safeguard the planet for the generations to come", the Prime Minister is failing to match up his rhetoric on climate change with actions. This has been confirmed by Gordon Brown's own environmental adviser, Jonathan Porritt, who has accused the Prime Minister of failing to match his words with deeds.

Has our PCT gone mad?

First they decide to put out to tender the 'personal medical service' contracts of our GP's; then they decide there are enough NHS dentists in Bury St Edmunds and refuse to fund more!
