A wrecking ball next to the words save our green belt

Save our green belt

The Government has doubled the housebuilding target for Stockport, weakened the protections on a third of our precious green belt, and is forcing the Council through Ministerial Directives and threats to adopt a Local Plan which will let developers target green belt first.

We oppose this government’s ‘developers charter’ and need your voice.  Do you agree with us that the green spaces that make our area special need to be preserved, and new housing should first be built on brownfield sites, after the infrastructure is provided with schools, improved transport, and GP places guaranteed? Help us send a message to Government and make Labour listen to local people.

Find our more about the local plan on our frequently asked questions page.

View from the Commons - Happy Anniversary

2008 marks some significant anniversaries. It is exactly 100 years since the first Old Age Pensions were introduced in 1908 by Lloyd George and the Liberal Government (to be followed in 1911 by the Liberal Government introducing the first Sickness and Unemployment benefits). It is 60 years since the NHS was created in 1948- by a Labour Government but based upon a blueprint drawn up by the Liberal William Beveridge. The same William Beveridge who drew up the 1919 Act, that under Prime Minister Lloyd George introduced large scale Council Housing.

New partnership needed on Climate Change says Clegg

Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg has called for local and national government and business to take a lead on protecting the environment for future generations, and to motivate individuals and families to take action. On a visit to Islington Ecology Centre, Mr Clegg praised the Liberal Democrat-run Council's Climate Change Partnership scheme, which has set a target of reducing Islington's CO2 emissions by 55,000 tonnes by 2010. Speaking earlier this week, Cllr Lucy Watt, Islington's Executive Member for Environment, said: "The council has signed a pledge to reduce our own carbon emissions, and we've encouraged other organisations across Islington to do the same. Now we're giving individual residents the chance to join in and pledge to reduce their own carbon emissions". The Council provides a green "toolkit" with a free energy-saving light bulb, practical advi
