Breast Symptomatic Service at Stepping Hill Hospital

Lisa Smart talking to an NHS member of staff

I’ve been listening to many residents telling me about problems accessing the Breast Symptomatic Services since the service at Stepping Hill closed earlier this year.

I’m absolutely furious about yet another vital NHS service that’s been stripped to the bone by Conservative cuts!

Since the Breast Service closed, women are having to travel to Macclesfield instead, a difficult and long journey especially by public transport (by bus it takes nearly 3 hours).

Mobile screening units visit local medical centres from time to time but these aren’t accessible for all patients.

We are rightly told how important regular mammograms are for our health. But the lack of a local Symptomatic service will inevitably mean that fewer women will get checked out and possibly fewer cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed and treated quickly.

In May I wrote to the Chief Executive of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust to raise the issue and to express my serious concerns about the effect on women in our area.

I personally spoke with a Senior Manager who told me of the struggles they have funding the service and of ensuring that the staff were not driven to exhaustion with the ever increasing demands being placed on them.

Clearly, our NHS is not getting the support it needs.

50% more NHS staff are experiencing debilitating levels of work stress compared with the general working population. 40% report being unwell as a result of work stress during the previous year.

Shortages in the NHS workforce is one of the most serious and urgent problems facing the NHS – the lack of nurses, doctors, and care workers. And Brexit is making it worse.

We’ve lost 5,000 net EU nurses & midwives in the last two years. There are currently 41,000 nursing vacancies in England.

The Conservatives, distracted by their pursuit of Brexit, have failed to give the NHS the support it needs.

We cannot trust the Conservatives with the NHS.

Liberal Democrats demand better for the NHS and social care services. We are committed to securing the future of the NHS.

The women of Hazel Grove deserve better.

We the undersigned are seriously concerned about the impact of the closure of the Breast Symptomatic Service at Stepping Hill Hospital. We ask that the service be reinstated as soon as funding is made available to recruit and support the skilled staff that the service and its patients need.
